Sea of Thieves Launches Season 17 ‘Smugglers’ Tide’ With New Faction Missions and QoL Fixes

Rare will deliver three acts over the next three months, including heists in September with fort upgrades arriving October.

Overview

  • The Smuggler’s League faction and associated smuggling missions are now available alongside a new season UI tab that tracks rewards and activities across three acts.
  • Quality-of-life improvements include the option to opt out of cross-server matchmaking for hourglass battles, secondary-function controller rebinding and a fix for ship-approach stuttering, plus regional servers in France, South Africa and India to reduce latency.
  • The season’s new battle pass and Pirate Emporium cosmetics accompany the Plunder Pass and Pirate Profiles feature for extra characters without resetting existing progress.
  • Rare’s creative director Drew Stevens has outlined ongoing investigations into water desync, lengthy loading times, world-event frequency during conflicts and repeated single-crew sinkings.
  • Players can look forward to a midseason artwork-stealing heist in September and the transformation of skeleton forts into Flameheart’s reaper forts in October under the new three-month schedule.
