Sea Lion Pup Rescued in Mountain View Is Recovering at Marine Mammal Center

Hospital staff report progress for the underweight pup during rehabilitation.

Overview

  • Security guards and a Mountain View police officer responded Jan. 5 after a sea lion pup wandered onto Garcia Avenue and into a parking lot.
  • Officer McPherson guided the animal out of traffic and placed it in her patrol vehicle for transport to The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito.
  • The center named the pup Babymac and initially found him malnourished, very weak, and too young to be on his own.
  • Babymac was placed in intensive care quarantine and has since improved enough to transfer out, according to the center.
  • Officials say he remains in rehabilitation and is not yet strong enough for a potential release, a status they highlighted in social posts crediting Mountain View police.
