SDA Readies Falcon 9 Launch of 21 Northrop Tranche 1 Transport Satellites
A successful flight would show whether industry teams can operate transport satellites at the scale SDA needs and affect plans to finish Tranche 1 by spring 2027.
Overview
- SDA plans to launch 21 Northrop Grumman-built transport satellites on a SpaceX Falcon 9 from Vandenberg, a mission that will add to the 63 transport and tracking satellites already in orbit for Tranche 1.
- This is Northrop’s first Tranche 1 flight and the company is also contracted to deliver another 21 transport satellites plus 14 missile-tracking spacecraft, exposing the firm to large-scale production and operations for the first time.
- SDA director Gurpartap Sandhoo said operating 21 satellites at once will bring scaling problems during early operations but expressed confidence Northrop and the SDA team can fix issues that arise.
- York Space Systems’ transport satellites have been moved into SDA’s operations center and entered limited experimentation, while Lockheed Martin spacecraft transfers remain troubled with only four moved so far.
- After a nine-month pause to resolve on-orbit and testing delays, SDA is targeting its first Tranche 1 tracking-layer flight in December or early 2027 and aims to have the full Tranche 1 fielded by late spring 2027, a timeline that could prompt tighter early oversight on future contracts.
