Scottsdale, Kyrene and Gilbert Consider Campus Closures as Boards Meet Tonight

Local leaders cite falling enrollment plus tighter budgets as they advance closure proposals.

Overview

  • Scottsdale Unified scheduled a Dec. 9 meeting that could decide the fate of Echo Canyon K–8 and Pima Elementary, which enroll roughly 600 students combined.
  • If closures are approved in Scottsdale, students would move to other campuses and the buildings could be repurposed for academic uses, with a Desert Canyon K–8 reconfiguration also under consideration.
  • Kyrene’s board holds a Dec. 9 study session on proposals to close up to eight schools, with alternative five- and six-school options prepared and a final vote expected Dec. 16.
  • Gilbert’s board meets Dec. 9 to review the proposed closure of Pioneer Elementary, with no action set tonight, a vote scheduled for Jan. 27, 2026, and possible rezoning in fall 2026.
  • Financial pressure is intensifying after November’s failed local funding measures and a state vote to cut 3% from Window Rock and Globe Unified while starting to remove DEI language from standards.
