Scottish Woman Sentenced for Assaulting MSP Monica Lennon During Campaign

Elspeth Wood, 57, assaulted Scottish Labour MSP Monica Lennon during a campaign event in Hamilton by grabbing her and repeatedly licking her neck.
The incident occurred in May 2024 following the announcement of a general election by then-Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
Wood pleaded guilty to threatening and abusive behavior and was sentenced to a community payback order with three years of supervision and counseling.
She has been placed on the sex offenders’ register for three years and is banned from contacting Lennon for the same period under a non-harassment order.
Monica Lennon described the attack as a violation and highlighted ongoing concerns about the safety of women in politics, emphasizing the need for greater protections.
