Scottish Brothers Set Pacific Rowing Record With Nonstop Peru-to-Australia Crossing

The Maclean trio’s expedition has raised about £790,000 to fund clean-water projects in Madagascar.

Overview

  • Jamie, Ewan and Lachlan Maclean landed in Cairns on Saturday after roughly 139–140 days at sea covering more than 14,000 kilometres.
  • They are reported as the first team to complete the full South America-to-Australia row and the fastest human-powered crossing on that route, surpassing earlier marks including Fedor Konyukhov’s 2014 solo time.
  • The brothers rowed in two-hour shifts aboard the custom carbon-fibre Rose Emily without resupplies or a safety boat, carrying about 500 kg of food.
  • Severe weather forced detours, with one storm reportedly sweeping a brother overboard, pushing their expected Friday arrival to Saturday.
  • They arrived to an emotional welcome with bagpipes and flags, were greeted by more than 50 family and friends from the UK, and drew support from Ewan McGregor, Mark Wahlberg, Flea, and whisky sponsors Rare Whisky 101 and Talisker.
