Scottish authorities approve extradition of US fugitive accused of faking death to avoid rape charges

Nicholas Alahverdian, who used aliases including Nicholas Rossi, is accused of rape in Utah in 2008.
Alahverdian allegedly faked his own death in 2020 to avoid prosecution for the rape charge and other allegations.
Despite claiming mistaken identity, a Scottish court ruled Alahverdian could be extradited to the US.
The Scottish government signed the extradition order on September 28, 2023.
Alahverdian can appeal within two weeks but also faces questioning in the UK over a separate rape allegation.
