Overview
- Scotland's oldest tartan, the 'Glen Affric', dating back to around 1500-1600, has been recreated for modern production by tartan fabric creator and weaver House of Edgar.
- The original fabric was discovered in a peat bog in the Highlands during forestry work and donated to the Scottish Tartans Authority in the 1980s.
- Experts were able to identify green and brown or black stripes overlaid on one or two colors in the original fabric, and dye analysis revealed it had also contained red and yellow.
- The recreated tartan will be available to buy as part of House of Edgar's new collection, 'The Seventeen Eighty Three Collection'.
- The original fabric is believed to have been a status piece, likely to have belonged to an important person, possibly a woman or a gentleman of rank, and would probably have been worn as a shawl or an upper body wrap.
