Scientists Unveil Touchable 3D Hologram with Elastic Diffuser Technology

FlexiVol, the first interactive holographic display allowing direct hand manipulation, is set for further development and a debut at CHI 2025.

FlexiVol replaces traditional rigid diffusers with elastic strips, enabling safe, tactile interaction with 3D holograms for the first time.
Users can manipulate virtual objects using natural gestures like pinching, swiping, and dragging, similar to touchscreen interactions.
In early tests, participants found FlexiVol faster, more accurate, and more intuitive compared to conventional 3D mouse controls.
