Scientists Achieve Breakthrough in Reviving Frozen Human Brain Tissue

New chemical solution enables brain organoids to maintain structure and function after thawing, paving the way for advanced neurological research.

  • Researchers at Fudan University developed a chemical mixture called MEDY to preserve brain tissue during freezing.
  • The mixture includes methylcellulose, ethylene glycol, DMSO, and Y27632, preventing cell death during the thawing process.
  • Brain organoids frozen in MEDY for up to 18 months showed similar growth and function to non-frozen counterparts.
  • The technique was successfully tested on brain tissue from a 9-month-old epilepsy patient, maintaining its pre-freezing structure.
  • This advancement could revolutionize the study of neurological conditions and potentially lead to whole-brain cryopreservation.
