Schumer Hits Record Low in New York Favorability, Siena Poll Finds

Progressive pressure intensified following a shutdown deal that split Senate Democrats.

Overview

  • A Siena College poll conducted Nov. 10–12 of 802 registered voters shows Schumer at 32% favorable and 55% unfavorable, the lowest rating in the poll’s history.
  • Within his party, Democrats are nearly evenly divided at 45% favorable to 43% unfavorable, while 74% of Republicans and 61% of independents view him negatively.
  • Ratings are weak across regions and most demographics, with a plurality of New York City voters and majorities in the suburbs and upstate viewing him unfavorably, though Black voters remain more supportive than white and Hispanic voters.
  • Pollster Steven Greenberg contrasted the results with Schumer’s 2005 highs, when his favorability peaked at 70% to 22% unfavorable.
  • Coverage notes renewed calls from progressive groups for Schumer to step down and speculation about a future primary challenge as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez posts stronger favorability (42%–37% overall; 62%–20% among Democrats), and Schumer’s office did not comment to one outlet.
