Schmid Nears Sölden Return as Hirscher Withdraws, Targets Levi Comeback

Germany sets top-10 and top-20 targets for the opener, pending late fitness checks.

Overview

  • Alexander Schmid was named to Germany’s 10-athlete squad for Sölden after receiving a recent green light from a back-to-competition test.
  • He will make a short-term call on starting, following a rehab that took longer because both menisci were affected in his December ACL tear.
  • Schmid returned to snow in the summer and has trained on the glacier since late September to prepare for a possible World Cup comeback.
  • Marcel Hirscher will skip Sölden after a two-week illness and is aiming to restart in the Levi slalom on 16 November for the Netherlands.
  • DSV sport director Wolfgang Maier outlined goals of one top-10 and an additional top-20 at the season opener, with leaders including Lena Dürr, Emma Aicher and Linus Straßer.
