Schleswig-Holstein Allocates €39 Million for Sylt Coastal Protection
The initiative will use 5.6 million cubic meters of sand over four years to combat erosion and safeguard the mainland from storm surges.
- The Schleswig-Holstein government has approved €39 million for sand replenishment along Sylt’s coasts from 2025 to 2028.
- A total of 5.6 million cubic meters of sand will be distributed, with 3.9 million cubic meters directed to the island's west coast and 1 million to a sand reef offshore.
- Sylt plays a crucial role in protecting the mainland from storm surges, alongside the Halligen islands and coastal dikes, according to Environment Minister Tobias Goldschmidt.
- Without these measures, Sylt’s coastline would erode by one to four meters annually, posing significant risks to the region.
- The Danish contractor Rohde Nielsen A/S, which has handled similar projects in the past, will carry out the sand replenishment work.
