Buyers Beware: Scammers Exploit High Demand for GeForce RTX 4090 in China Amid US Sanctions

A Hong Kong-based PC enthusiast was scammed when he bought a used MSI GeForce RTX 4090 card only to find it was missing its GPU and several VRAM chips.
The scam was executed via the Carousell online second-hand market place, with the exchange of goods and money taking place in person.
The buyer, Mr Hong, could not get any help from the local police and could no longer contact the seller.
The scammer is suspected to have used the spare parts on an AI card that is filling Chinese AI farms across the country.
Due to the adjustments in US sanctions, GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards are even more highly prized in China now.
