- A Hong Kong-based PC enthusiast was scammed when he bought a used MSI GeForce RTX 4090 card only to find it was missing its GPU and several VRAM chips.
- The scam was executed via the Carousell online second-hand market place, with the exchange of goods and money taking place in person.
- The buyer, Mr Hong, could not get any help from the local police and could no longer contact the seller.
- The scammer is suspected to have used the spare parts on an AI card that is filling Chinese AI farms across the country.
- Due to the adjustments in US sanctions, GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards are even more highly prized in China now.
