Scaffolding Collapse Injures Five at Summit Skywalker Ranch

Cal/OSHA has opened a probe to determine whether installation or equipment failures caused the collapse during event setup.

Overview

  • Workers were setting up an event on Monday when scaffolding and large display screens fell in the upper campus area of Summit Skywalker Ranch, trapping at least one person.
  • Marin County Fire, San Rafael and Novato fire crews arrived after an 11:20 a.m. dispatch and used airbags to lift the collapsed structure and free a trapped worker.
  • Five men were hurt and three were taken to local hospitals; one suffered a serious head injury and was transported in very serious condition.
  • The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health is investigating the cause of the failure to see if installation, equipment, or safety practices played a role.
  • Summit Skywalker Ranch, a private event site on George Lucas’s property, has not publicly responded to media requests as first responders cleared the scene by early afternoon.
