Scaffolding and Display Screens Collapse at Summit Skywalker Ranch, Five Workers Hurt

Cal/OSHA has opened an investigation to determine why the temporary structure failed during event setup.

Overview

  • During event setup on Monday morning at the upper campus of Summit Skywalker Ranch five men were injured when scaffolding and large LCD display screens collapsed.
  • Marin County Fire, San Rafael Fire and Novato Fire crews responded to an 11:23 a.m. dispatch and used airbags to lift part of the collapsed structure and free a trapped worker.
  • Three injured men were taken to local hospitals while one person was treated at the scene and released, and all fire units had cleared the site by early afternoon.
  • A battalion chief said the most seriously hurt worker suffered a head injury and was transported 'code three,' a designation fire officials described as very serious.
  • The property houses Skywalker Sound and other production facilities, and officials say Cal/OSHA will investigate the cause and any workplace safety failures before decisions about event plans or liability are made.
