Overview
- Defence sources told EFE that roughly a dozen deployed soldiers have tested positive for scabies, while the Unión de Militares de Tropa (UMT) reports at least 14 cases concentrated in one company of Grupo de Regulares nº 54.
- Troops were housed in the disused Antigua Batería de Costa K-8, which unions describe as without regular hygienic maintenance, prone to infestations and overcrowded, a setting they say likely amplified transmission.
- The Asociación de Tropa y Marinería Española (ATME) and other associations have formally asked the Ministry of Defence to disclose exact case counts by unit, whether cases are epidemiologically linked, and if contact-tracing protocols have been activated.
- Health authorities note scabies spreads easily in crowded, unsanitary conditions and the Secretary of State for Health has said scabies is a foreseeable risk in migrant and overcrowded settings, framing the issue as a public-health concern.
- Scabies is a contagious but treatable skin infestation and, when two or more related cases occur, it can trigger reporting under Spain’s System of Diseases of Mandatory Notification (EDO), which would require formal surveillance, disinfection and medical contingency steps.
