SC Collegium Backs Two for Himachal High Court, Clears Appointments in Karnataka, Madras and Tripura

The recommendations now await executive clearance under the Memorandum of Procedure.

  • Advocates Jiya Lal Bhardwaj and Romesh Verma were recommended for elevation to the Himachal Pradesh High Court.
  • The collegium led by Chief Justice B. R. Gavai approved the slate at its September 15 meeting.
  • In Karnataka, judicial officers Geetha Kadaba Bharatharaja Setty, Muralidhara Pai Borkatte, and Tyagaraja Narayan Inavally were cleared as judges, and Justice Kurubarahalli Venkataramareddy Aravind was approved as a permanent judge.
  • The collegium also proposed permanent status for Justices N. Senthilkumar and G. Arul Murugan in the Madras High Court and for Justice Biswajit Palit in the Tripura High Court.
  • If cleared and notified, Himachal’s working strength is expected to rise from 11 to 13 judges, against a sanctioned strength of 17 that has remained underfilled following recent elevations.
