SBS Dissolves Cooperativa Rural Abancay

The regulator ordered a supervised liquidation after the cooperative exhausted its capital following a failed overseas recapitalization.

Overview

  • The Superintendencia de Banca, Seguros y AFP (SBS) issued Resolución N.° 01525-2026 on Wednesday declaring the dissolution of Cooperativa de Ahorro y Crédito Rural Abancay and excluding it from the national registry.
  • The decision followed the SBS finding a negative patrimony of S/984,168.48 and the cooperative's failure to reverse the cause that led to intervention before the May 24 deadline.
  • A partner proposed a US$300,000 rescue held in Sweden but the funds were not transferred into an account within the Peruvian financial or cooperative system, so the regulator did not accept the offer as effective.
  • The SBS appointed Aldo Erick Rojas Sánchez as principal temporary administrator and Alex Fernando Valderrama Arce as alternate, kept prohibitions on creditor actions in force, and began a supervised liquidation while activating the cooperative deposit insurance fund for savers.
  • The closure is part of a wider sector reordering since 2018 that removed about 220 cooperatives from the market, and the cooperative will remain a legal entity until the supervised liquidation or bankruptcy process and final registration are completed.
