Overview
- Business Today and other outlets reported on Friday that a lending consortium led by State Bank of India agreed to provide about $3.5 billion to Vodafone Idea, but the banks and the company did not immediately confirm the deal.
- Sources said the loan would carry lender conditions that require Kumar Mangalam Birla to remain chairman for roughly the 10-year tenor and include repayment guarantees in case of default.
- Vodafone Idea posted stronger Q1 FY27 results with revenue of ₹11,689 crore, a narrower net loss of ₹3,754 crore, and consolidated EBITDA of ₹5,034 crore, results that lenders cited as supporting the financing case.
- Analysts say the reported debt would cover cash needs through FY27–29 but warned that VIL may still need about ₹16,000 crore of fresh equity by FY30, which could trigger further government conversion of spectrum liabilities.
- If completed, the financing would speed equipment orders and site rollouts that can raise coverage and data speeds for millions of subscribers while lowering the immediate risk of insolvency for the operator.
