Saxony Tourism Slips in First Half as Chemnitz Surges on Culture Year

The absence of last year’s mega events lowers the baseline, with Chemnitz’s Capital of Culture status drawing visitors.

Overview

  • Hotels, guesthouses and campsites counted 3.63 million guests and 8.93 million overnight stays from January to June, a 2.6% year‑on‑year decline.
  • The Chemnitz/Zwickau region attracted roughly 269,000 guests in the half year, an increase of 9.4% compared with 2024.
  • Chemnitz recorded nearly 20% more overnight stays, driven in part by international demand that rose 23.4% with 31,000 additional foreign visitors.
  • Saxony’s tourism minister Barbara Klepsch said the results underscore culture’s role in stimulating travel, pointing to the European Capital of Culture 2025 effect.
  • The Ore Mountains region also benefited from the Chemnitz program, partially offsetting softer results elsewhere in the state.
