Overview

  • Saxony led all states with an average of 10,727 kilograms of milk per cow last year, closely followed by Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania at 10,721 kilograms.
  • Germany’s per-cow milk output rose by 257 kilograms to around 9,600 kilograms compared with the previous year.
  • In 2024, milk fat climbed by nine kilograms and protein by 21 kilograms per cow on average.
  • Total milk production nationwide remained nearly unchanged despite a reduction in the number of dairy cows.
  • Breeding focused on health and robustness—particularly in Holstein-Schwarzbunt herds in Saxony—underpinned the productivity gains.
