Saxony State Parliament to Become Four‑Year Construction Site

Two new buildings will free space for a full overhaul of the historic main building to replace worn wiring, media systems and fire‑safety and accessibility features.

Overview

  • Preliminary site work has begun with construction fences already erected and SIB planning formal site setup for June 2026 followed by excavation and specialist deep‑foundation work in the second half of the year.
  • The project will add a 70‑metre riverside annex and an inner‑court 'Kubus' with a modern hearing hall, with budgets of €73.6 million for the annex and €38.7 million for the Kubus.
  • Both new buildings are expected to take roughly four years to complete, after which deputies and administration will move into the annex so the 1920s-linked Altbau can be fully vacated and comprehensively renovated.
  • The renovation program targets a full renewal of the Landtag’s IT cabling, electrical and media technology and improvements to accessibility, fire protection and lighting to bring decades‑old infrastructure up to current standards.
  • Planning began in 2019 under the office of longtime Landtag architect Peter Kulka and is now led by his daughter Katrin Leers‑Kulka with the Staatsbetrieb Sächsisches Immobilien‑ und Baumanagement (SIB) managing execution and public access shifted to the Elbe side during construction.
