Saxony Apprenticeships Decline as Chemnitz Records More Applicants Than Vacancies

Officials cite economic uncertainty alongside mismatches between candidate skills and employer expectations.

Overview

  • The regional labor agency reports a 5.7% drop in available training positions to 19,647, with nearly 1,300 applicants still searching and about 1,700 posts unfilled statewide.
  • The Chambers of Industry and Commerce in Chemnitz, Dresden and Leipzig concluded 11,670 new apprenticeship contracts, down 4.5% from the previous year.
  • The crafts sector bucked the trend with 5,875 new contracts, a 5.4% increase, according to the state association of craft chambers.
  • In Chemnitz, the labor agency counted 6% fewer applicants and nearly 20% fewer offered positions year-on-year, leaving 54 youths unplaced versus 37 vacancies.
  • Labor authorities and business groups point to economic headwinds and candidate–employer mismatches, including language barriers, weaker school performance and gaps in professional and social skills.
