Saxony-Anhalt Has Spent Less Than Half of Its €1.97 Billion Corona Special Fund

Officials blame lengthy procurement steps, contractor shortages.

Overview

  • By the end of July, 47% of the special fund had been disbursed, up only four percentage points since March, according to the finance ministry.
  • Schools have drawn about €11 million of €28.2 million for digitalization and just €3.3 million of €48.1 million earmarked for pandemic-resilient construction and equipment.
  • Hospital investment lines remain underused, though two new grants totaling roughly €11 million were issued for disability housing projects in the Harz to improve protection in future pandemics.
  • More than €300 million set aside for digitizing the state administration remains to be allocated.
  • Regular repayment of the fund is scheduled to start in 2029 at about €100 million per year.
