Saxon Potato Surplus Arrives in Berlin for Free Distribution

Early drops are reaching community outlets, with most of the 4,000-tonne glut still seeking receivers.

Overview

  • Trucks loaded overnight in Saxony reached Berlin around 7:30 a.m., with unloading at the Moabit wholesale market and deliveries to city pick-up sites including Tempelhofer Feld.
  • Roughly 22 tonnes went straight to the Berliner Tafel for immediate routing to more than 400 social institutions across 48 regular and seven interim distribution points.
  • Sachsens Tafel secured about 12 tonnes for local distribution, warning that many branches cannot handle very large loose loads such as the 40 tonnes initially offered.
  • Osterland Agrar organized the giveaway with Ecosia and the Berliner Morgenpost to divert surplus potatoes from biogas or waste after a strong harvest depressed prices.
  • Organizers and food banks highlight storage, transport and handling constraints as key bottlenecks while additional loads are planned for redistribution.
