SAWS Warns of Severe Thunderstorms in KZN, Mpumalanga and Limpopo on Wednesday

The weather service urges extra caution as storms, coastal gusts and heat elevate flooding, navigation and fire risks.

Overview

  • Yellow level 2 alerts flag severe thunderstorms for northwestern KwaZulu-Natal, the escarpment of Mpumalanga and the central and escarpment regions of Limpopo, with threats of heavy downpours, localised flooding, hail, strong gusts and frequent lightning.
  • A yellow level 1 warning for damaging coastal winds is in effect between Cape Agulhas and Plettenberg Bay, with difficult navigation expected at sea.
  • Extremely high fire danger is forecast in parts of the central interior, including previously named municipalities in the Northern Cape, Western Cape and Eastern Cape.
  • Hot to very hot conditions persist across several provinces, with very high to extreme UV indices and oppressive humidity in the extreme northeastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
  • SAWS advises residents and mariners to monitor official updates, avoid unnecessary exposure to hazardous conditions and take standard heat and storm safety precautions.
