Overview
- The South African Weather Service has active Yellow Level 2 warnings that cover severe thunderstorms in North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Free State and the Northern Cape.
- SAWS warned on Tuesday that the storms can produce heavy downpours, hail, damaging winds and excessive lightning that may cause localised flooding of roads, low-lying areas and bridges and damage to settlements and infrastructure.
- Separate Yellow Level 2 damaging-wind warnings affect parts of the Eastern Cape, including Nelson Mandela Bay and Buffalo City municipalities, with likely disruption to beachfront activities and difficulties for small craft navigation.
- Extremely high fire danger is forecast for parts of the Western Cape (Matzikama, Cederberg, Bergrivier) and Kamiesberg in the Northern Cape, where very hot conditions will raise the risk of rapid fire spread.
- The pattern reflects spring transition weather: intense convective storms inland at the same time as strong dry winds and heat along western coastal corridors, creating different hazards for communities and emergency services to manage over the next two days.
