SAWS Issues Yellow Level 2 Storm Warnings for KwaZulu‑Natal and Eastern Cape

Officials say heavy rain, hail, strong winds, local flooding risk, infrastructure damage, travel disruption will follow.

Overview

  • The South African Weather Service issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms in parts of KwaZulu‑Natal for Sunday, 25 October, valid from 10:00 to 22:59.
  • SAWS followed with a Yellow Level 2 warning for the eastern half of the Eastern Cape for Monday, 26 October, valid from 08:00 to 20:59.
  • Forecasters say storms are driven by a deepening surface trough and an upper‑level trough that will produce heavy downpours, damaging winds, hail and frequent lightning in central and eastern areas.
  • At the same time, much of the country’s central interior and parts of northern KwaZulu‑Natal and the Eastern Cape face extremely high fire danger, raising the risk of fires where conditions are hot and dry.
  • SAWS urges residents to monitor updates, avoid flooded roads, seek substantial shelter during storms, protect livestock and secure temporary structures because storms can cause local flooding, road closures and power or communications outages.
