SAWS Issues Yellow Level 2 Storm Warning for KwaZulu-Natal

A deepening surface trough will fuel storms capable of heavy rain, hail, damaging winds, lightning or localised flooding.

Overview

  • The South African Weather Service issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms that will be in effect on Sunday 25 October from 10:00 to 22:59 for central and eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
  • SAWS says the trough-driven storms may produce heavy downpours, damaging winds, large or small hail, excessive lightning and localised flooding that could harm infrastructure and settlements.
  • A separate warning covers the central interior and northern KZN plus parts of the Eastern Cape and forecasters also flagged extremely high fire danger in sections of northern KZN.
  • Authorities and reporters urge residents to monitor SAWS updates, avoid driving through flooded roads, slow down in poor visibility and seek shelter in solid buildings when storms approach.
  • Expect isolated showers and thundershowers across most of the province with morning interior fog and warm daytime temperatures, conditions that raise the risk of both flash flooding and wind- or hail-related damage.
