SAWS Issues Severe Thunderstorm Alerts for Limpopo and Mpumalanga, Extending Into Gauteng

SAWS says Gauteng’s heat does not meet heatwave criteria, with spring patterns pointing to wetter weeks ahead.

Overview

  • Yellow level 2 warnings target north-eastern Mpumalanga and central to eastern Limpopo, with the severe-storm risk reaching parts of Gauteng.
  • Forecasters flag heavy downpours, large amounts of small hail, damaging winds and excessive lightning, raising the chance of localised flooding in low-lying areas, and advise securing outdoor items and avoiding travel in storm-prone spots.
  • Temperatures in Gauteng are forecast to peak near 34°C in Pretoria and around 31°C in Johannesburg and Ermelo, with thunderstorms expected later in the day.
  • SAWS clarifies the hot spell is not a heatwave, noting the threshold is at least 5°C above average for three consecutive days and indicating higher rain chances in the coming weeks.
  • Further alerts include extremely high fire danger over parts of North West, the Free State, southern Mpumalanga, Gauteng and Blouberg Municipality, plus a yellow level 1 marine warning for damaging waves between Cape Columbine and Plettenberg Bay.
