Saws Issues Orange Level 5 Storm Warning for Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga on Monday

Emergency services are mobilised for potential flooding, large hail and damaging winds across several provinces.

Overview

  • The South African Weather Service forecasts severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours, excessive lightning and strong winds, warning of flooding on roads, low-lying areas and bridges.
  • An Orange Level 5 alert covers northern Gauteng, central Limpopo and the Highveld of Mpumalanga, with risks that include infrastructure damage and service disruptions.
  • A Yellow Level 4 warning extends to southern Gauteng, much of Limpopo outside the central parts and Lowveld, the Mpumalanga escarpment and extreme southwest, and northwestern KwaZulu-Natal.
  • Johannesburg Emergency Services remain on high alert, urging residents to avoid river crossings and flooded bridges and advising motorists to drive cautiously and increase following distances.
  • eThekwini’s Disaster Management teams are fully activated and advising people to stay indoors where possible, while very hot conditions are expected in parts of the Western and Northern Cape.
