Savannah renames downtown square from slavery advocate to Black educator

  • Savannah city council voted to rename square from John C. Calhoun to Susie King Taylor.
  • Taylor was a Black woman who taught reading and writing to formerly enslaved people.
  • This is the first name change for a Savannah square in 140 years.
  • Some opposed the change, saying it erases history.
  • Other finalists considered were a pastor, civil rights leader, preservationists, and an Army pilot.
