Savannah Hispanic Parade and Festival Canceled as Organizers Cite Safety Risks From ICE Activity

Organizers will replace the street event with a Sept. 27 breakfast following recent ICE actions that raised safety and profiling concerns.

Overview

  • The Metropolitan Savannah Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce scrapped the Broughton Street parade and festival, saying public crowds could face random stops or profiling if ICE or police intervened.
  • Recent enforcement included 475 detentions at Hyundai’s Bryan County megasite and instances in June of ICE riding with Chatham County police during local operations.
  • In place of the parade, the chamber will host a Hispanic Heritage Month business breakfast on Sept. 27 at the Hyatt Regency in Savannah.
  • A planned El Grito de Dolores celebration was also canceled after threats and a lack of funds for additional security, according to organizers.
  • Port Wentworth still plans to hold its Hispanic Festival on Sept. 26, with city officials emphasizing a welcoming atmosphere and a focus on safety.
