Saugus Man, 20, Dies After High-Speed Police Chase Ends in I-93 Crash in New Hampshire

State police opened an investigation, requesting public tips to Sgt. Kenneth McGrath.

  • New Hampshire State Police said a trooper attempted a traffic stop at 12:51 a.m. on I-93 northbound near Exit 12 for a speeding blue 2020 Honda Civic.
  • The driver, identified as Benjamin Tapia-Gately of Saugus, Massachusetts, did not stop as the car reportedly reached about 120 mph and drove erratically.
  • As the vehicle approached Exit 18 in Canterbury, the driver lost control on the off-ramp, went off the road, crossed the northbound on-ramp, descended an embankment, and struck a tree.
  • Tapia-Gately was ejected, troopers and Canterbury Fire and Rescue attempted life-saving measures, and he was pronounced dead at the scene; no other occupants were in the car.
  • The crash remains under investigation, and authorities asked anyone with information to contact Sergeant Kenneth McGrath.
