Overview
- OpenAI security discovered a thumb-sized, encrypted audio recorder plugged into a TV in an executive conference room on Sept. 30 during a sweep of the San Francisco office.
- Prosecutors say activity from Sept. 24–30, including chatbot prompts tied to a household account and internal productivity-tool queries about rooms and calendars, helped link the device to an employee.
- Surveillance footage allegedly placed Abdulrahman Alfozan near the conference room on multiple dates and on Oct. 5 security found a second similar device in an unattended bag that contained his ID.
- Federal agents arrested Alfozan on Friday, Oct. 9, he appeared in court on Oct. 13 and remains in custody with a detention hearing set for Oct. 19; the DOJ charged him with intercepting oral communications.
- OpenAI said it used its internal AI models to analyze the device, referred the case to the FBI, fired Alfozan and so far has found no public evidence of model, source-code, or customer-data exfiltration.
