Saudi-Backed Coalition Says It Has Retaken Yemen’s Hadramaut

Riyadh is pushing talks to corral southern factions.

Overview

  • Presidential Leadership Council chief Rashad al-Alimi said forces supported by Saudi Arabia reclaimed all military and security sites in Hadramaut after an operation that began Friday.
  • Two government military officials told AFP that neighboring Mahra and its forces shifted to the Saudi-backed side without resistance.
  • AFP reported at least 20 STC fighters were killed in a Saudi-led airstrike in Al-Khasha, and an STC officer said Saudi warplanes carried out intensive strikes on a base in Barshid near Mukalla.
  • The push follows a December blitz in which STC-aligned Hahdrami Elite Forces seized Seijun, the airport, military facilities, oil installations, and parts of Mahra.
  • Saudi Arabia accused the UAE of encouraging the STC offensive, set a 24-hour deadline for Emirati withdrawal, struck suspected arms shipments, and invited southern groups to a conference in Riyadh for dialogue.
