Overview
- The 4K restored version of Satyajit Ray's 1970 film 'Aranyer Din Ratri' will be showcased at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival in the Classics section.
- The restoration was led by The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project at L’Immagine Ritrovata, in partnership with the Film Heritage Foundation, Janus Films, and the Criterion Collection, funded by the Golden Globe Foundation.
- The original negatives, preserved by producer Purnima Dutta, were the basis for the meticulous restoration process.
- Sharmila Tagore, who starred in the film, and filmmaker Wes Anderson, a long-time admirer of Ray, will attend the screening alongside other collaborators.
- The film, based on Sunil Gangopadhyay’s novel, explores themes of masculinity, class, and cultural dislocation, and was previously nominated for the Golden Bear at the 20th Berlin International Film Festival.
