Overview
- Priya Cinema owner Arijit Dutta announced via Facebook that the film will play at select theatres and multiplexes nationwide starting 7 November.
- Kolkata plans include a special show at Priya on 7 November and a 31st KIFF screening at Nandan on 8 November, with Sharmila Tagore likely to attend according to local organizers.
- The restored print premiered at Cannes Classics in May, screened at Il Cinema Ritrovato in June, had its North American premiere at TIFF in September, and drew a standing ovation at the New York Film Festival.
- Wes Anderson introduced the Cannes screening and, through The Film Foundation, supported a 2019 restoration effort carried out by the Film Heritage Foundation, Janus Films, and The Criterion Collection with funding from the Golden Globe Foundation.
- The project used original camera and sound negatives preserved by producer Purnima Dutta, and new English subtitles were prepared by author Indrani Mazumdar for the revival of Ray’s 1970 film adapted from Sunil Gangopadhyay and once nominated at the Berlin Film Festival.
