The altercation began when a counter-protester allegedly grabbed an object from Stewart’s hand, prompting Stewart to respond with punches before being subdued by law enforcement.
Law enforcement had previously warned Stewart that demonstrations inside the Statehouse were prohibited, but he entered as a private citizen and conducted the ritual in the rotunda.
The event drew approximately 20 supporters of the Satanic Grotto and 300-400 Christian protesters, who held peaceful prayer demonstrations nearby in opposition to the ritual.
