Saskatoon Jury Convicts Roderick Sutherland of Manslaughter in Megan Gallagher’s Death

Prosecutors are seeking to have him remanded pending sentencing, bringing the final jury trial in a nine-accused case to a close.

Overview

  • Jurors found Sutherland guilty of manslaughter, unlawful confinement, and offering an indignity to human remains.
  • The 12-person jury deliberated for about 13.5 hours over two days before delivering the verdict late Friday at the Court of King’s Bench.
  • Crown prosecutor Bill Burge said he will ask the court to cancel Sutherland’s release and have him taken into custody pending sentencing, which has not yet been scheduled.
  • An agreed statement of facts said Gallagher was confined and assaulted in Sutherland’s Saskatoon garage before her body was dumped from the St. Louis Bridge; her remains were found on Sept. 29, 2022 near St. Louis.
  • Sutherland was the last of nine people implicated to stand trial, following earlier outcomes that included Robert Thomas’s second-degree murder plea with life and 18 years before parole, two manslaughter sentences of seven years, several pleas to indignity to human remains, and two stayed cases.
