Saskatoon Farm E. coli Outbreak Surpasses 100 Cases With High Amoebiasis Coinfection

Alberta Health Services continues to probe the farm’s water system after detecting norovirus alongside rotavirus in more than 1,000 test specimens.

Overview

  • As of August 14, Alberta Health Services has recorded 107 probable E. coli cases linked to Saskatoon Farm, with 68 of those cases also testing positive for Entamoeba histolytica.
  • Four people have been hospitalized in connection with the outbreak, and three have since been discharged.
  • The Saskatoon Farm restaurant has been closed by AHS inspectors since July 23; U-pick fields remain open and use separate water systems approved by health authorities.
  • Laboratory testing of over 1,000 specimens has also identified norovirus and rotavirus; it remains unclear whether these pathogens are linked to the farm outbreak.
  • Alberta Health Services urges anyone who visited the farm between July 1 and 18 to seek testing, and asymptomatic testing kits are available from the APL Provincial Laboratory for Public Health.
