Sarnaik Vows to Make Loss-Making MSRTC Profitable Within Two Years

The pledge follows a June white paper reporting Rs 10,324 crore in accumulated losses at the state carrier.

Overview

  • Speaking late Wednesday, the transport minister said he has initiated “radical positive change” since taking charge and committed to delivering profits in two years.
  • The MSRTC has posted profits in only eight of the past 45 fiscal years, with losses rising from Rs 4,603 crore in 2018–19 to Rs 10,324 crore in 2023–24, according to the corporation.
  • Founded in 1948, the corporation operates more than 15,000 buses that carry over 55 lakh passengers daily across Maharashtra.
  • Sarnaik blamed heavy truck movements linked to Bhiwandi godowns for severe congestion in Thane and Palghar, days after a jam on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad highway stranded more than 500 people for nearly 12 hours.
  • Coverage also reported MSRTC employees would receive a Rs 6,000 Diwali bonus and a Rs 12,500 advance.
