Sarmiento Train Derails Near Liniers, Injuring 20 as Service Partially Resumes

A federal inquiry is testing a suspected track‑switch failure with orders to check the driver’s sobriety.

Overview

  • Three cars of formation 3358 left the rails at about 15:50 near Rivadavia and Timoteo Gordillo, halting power on the line for rescue and inspections.
  • Twenty passengers were injured with no fatalities; nine were transported to hospitals Santojanni, Vélez Sarsfield, Álvarez and Cecilia Grierson, and 11 were treated on site.
  • Service was restored between Once and Moreno with delays and cancellations, and trains are not stopping at Liniers after an initial shutdown and limited operation further west.
  • Judge Julián Ercolini ordered alcohol and toxicology testing for the driver and directed police to secure and review recordings, radio traffic and signaller activity.
  • Authorities are conducting technical peritajes as early reporting points to a possible failure in a track switch, with unions noting recent changes to the switching system under broader maintenance concerns.
