Sarah Mullally Named Archbishop of Canterbury as Global South Leaders Reject Her Authority

Opposition centers on her backing for same-sex blessings, with Gafcon and the GSFA refusing recognition.

Overview

  • Currently the Bishop of London, Dame Sarah Mullally has been appointed the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury and the first woman to hold the office, with installation planned at Canterbury Cathedral in March 2026 following formal election and confirmation.
  • The Global South Fellowship of Anglican Churches called the choice a missed opportunity to reunite the Communion and said it will not recognize the Archbishop of Canterbury as its leader.
  • Gafcon’s chairman, Archbishop Laurent Mbanda, urged Mullally to repent over her support for same-sex blessings and warned her appointment will deepen existing divisions.
  • The Bishop of Portsmouth, Jonathan Frost, welcomed the nomination, praising Mullally’s pastoral qualities and inviting prayers for her and her family during the transition.
  • Mullally helped lead the Church of England’s Living in Love and Faith process that preceded General Synod’s 2023 approval of same-sex blessings, a stance central to conservative objections.
