Sapporo Culls Mother Bear and One Cub Near Fujino as Second Cub Escapes

The culling fell outside the city's new emergency-shooting rules due to its location away from residential streets.

  • At about 8:30 a.m., a hunter shot and killed the adult bear and the trapped cub, while the other cub fled into the mountains.
  • A municipal surveillance camera had captured a bear at approximately 3:50 a.m., and the city released the image to warn residents.
  • Sightings in the area have been reported since Sept. 26, including a parent and cub near Fujino Mukudori Park on Sept. 28, and authorities continue monitoring the remaining cub.
