Santilli Disavows Reichardt’s ‘Mental Illness’ Comment Ahead of Buenos Aires Vote

He moved to limit the fallout by rejecting the language days before the October 26 election.

Overview

  • Karen Reichardt, second on La Libertad Avanza’s Buenos Aires list, said on Radio Rivadavia that voting for kirchnerismo/peronismo is a “mental illness” and later defended it on X as a reference to a “cultural chip.”
  • The Asociación Argentina de Psiquiatras and opposition lawmakers condemned the remarks for stigmatizing mental health, issuing statements of concern and repudiation.
  • Diego Santilli, newly leading the LLA ticket in the province, called the phrase “desafortunada” and said he disagreed, seeking to refocus the campaign on security, taxes and jobs.
  • The dispute comes after José Luis Espert’s withdrawal and logistical turbulence, with electoral authorities rejecting reprinted ballots but allowing new posters that feature Santilli as the top candidate.
  • Separately, a lawyer filed a complaint against Diego Brancatelli and Pedro Rosemblat for allegedly encouraging actions that would nullify LLA ballots while joking about the Espert-to-Santilli change.
