Santanu Sen Moves Calcutta High Court to Challenge Two-Year Medical Suspension

He will next appear for a hearing on Monday to seek reversal of the council’s two-year ban.

Santanu Sen, who was removed from West Bengal’s list of doctors, has been a former president of the Indian Medical Association.

Overview

  • The West Bengal Medical Council suspended Sen on July 3 for allegedly listing the FRCP (Glasgow) fellowship on his letterhead without formal registration under state rules.
  • The two-year order removes his name from the register of practitioners and bars him from using the title “Dr” or issuing prescriptions.
  • Sen asserts that he deposited the Rs 10,000 fee and submitted all required documents for FRCP registration but received no response from the council.
  • He alleges the sanction is a political vendetta by a council led by a TMC legislator after his criticism of the party’s handling of an R.G. Kar hospital rape-murder case.
  • Justice Amrita Sinha granted Sen leave to file a petition contesting the suspension and admitted the matter for further hearing.
