Overview

  • Ono announced on August 18, 2025 that he will serve as the inaugural global president of the privately funded Ellison Institute of Technology.
  • EIT highlighted Ono’s background as an immunologist with a distinguished career in biomedical research and said his portfolio will target health, cancer research, food sustainability, clean energy and the safe, ethical development of artificial intelligence.
  • The hire comes after Ono resigned from the University of Michigan in May and after the Florida Board of Governors voted 10–6 in June to reject his planned appointment as University of Florida president following scrutiny of his handling of campus protests and ties to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.
  • The Ellison Institute is a non-degree research organization financed by Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison that operates sites in Oxford and Los Angeles and partners with the University of Oxford on research and scholarship programs.
  • Ono’s move leaves UF and Michigan continuing leadership searches and reflects a broader shift of senior academic leaders into well-funded private research enterprises that collaborate with major universities.
