Santa Fe Convention Approves Term Limits, Ends Legislative Immunity, Clears Path for Pullaro’s 2027 Bid

Delegates frame the package as institutional modernization with further steps pending in the reform process.

Overview

  • The plenary modified Article 64 to allow the governor and vice governor one consecutive reelection, passing 50 to 17.
  • Legislators, mayors and commune leaders are now restricted to a single reelection, capping continuous service in the same office at eight years.
  • A transitory clause treats the current gubernatorial term as the first but resets counts for other officials, enabling Pullaro to seek a new mandate in 2027 after a 45 to 22 vote.
  • The Chamber of Deputies will abandon the automatic majority formula in favor of proportional representation based on vote share.
  • Delegates also backed eliminating legislators’ immunity of process, lowering candidacy ages to 21 for deputies and 25 for senators, and leaders from the ruling coalition publicly praised the changes.
